Beautiful walks around the Lower North Shore

Posted in Local Lifestyle on September 29, 2021 by Anthony Somlai

One of the things people love most about living in Neutral Bay is the spectacular and varied walking trails around the Lower North Shore. Here are a few worth seeking out to appreciate this beautiful part of Sydney – and please let us know your favourite spots in the comments.

Cremorne Point walk

This picturesque walk has incredible views and takes you down and around the peninsula of Cremorne Point. And at only 3km it works as both a quick morning run or a relaxed weekend stroll. You get a clear view of the city skyline and the iconic harbour bridge and can watch the boats as they sail on the clear water of the bay.

As you walk, you’ll pass the stunning historic mansions that line the waterfront, some of which have stood for over a hundred years. If you have time, stop for coffee at the Cremorne Point Wharf on your way to or from the historic Robertsons Point Lighthouse.

Along the Mosman Bayside, you can stop in at the little known Lex and Ruby Graham Gardens and even swim a few laps at the historic MacCallum Pool.

Balmoral Beach

Another much-loved walk is along the stunning Balmoral Beach. The whole track is a little over 5km one way and will take you to or from Taronga Zoo. For those who have less energy or time, all sections of the walk are worthwhile, especially along Balmoral Beach itself.

For the more adventurous, there are two nudist beaches to pop into for an au naturel dip in the pristine waters. For those who prefer to keep their clothes on, there’s the family-friendly beach at Chowder Bay (complete with shark nets and playground) or, of course, Balmoral Beach itself.

Balmoral is the epitome of the Sydney family beach, with calm blue waters and plenty of amenities. Being tucked into a curve of shoreline protects swimmers and picnickers from the worst of the elements, and the water is always pancake flat and perfect for kids to paddle safely, or for a leisurely swim.

There are plenty of options for those who work up an appetite, too. Above Chowder Bay is the Ripples Chowder Bay Restaurant, perfect for some Sydney rock oysters or a bowl of pasta while taking in the harbour view. Right by Balmoral Beach is the local favourite Balmoral Beach House. It’s popular, so you may need to queue, but grab your fish and chips and head down to eat on the beach.

Some other great walks to try

While these are two unmissable walks, there are plenty more around Neutral Bay. Here are some others that are worth checking out.

  • Lower Spofforth Walk Reserve: A short walk through the suburban rainforest. This well-kept trail is perfect for nature lovers and people looking for a little peace right next to the heart of the city.
  • Kurraba Reserve: Head down the end of Kurraba road and you will find Kurraba Reserve. Another perfect place for taking in city and harbour views, the reserve is also dog friendly and has picnic benches scattered around to enjoy your packed lunch.
  • North Arm Track in Middle Cove: This walk is a little more off the beaten track and so usually very peaceful with some incredible views of Middle Harbour – a favourite of mine.

Whether it’s a gentle Lower North Shore walk and an ocean swim, a serious hike, some jogging, or taking in history and nature, Neutral Bay has it all.
